Those desperate to be in Leadership usually want it for the wrong reasons.
The worst candidates see it as something they deserve or earn. They want power, authority, and recognition.
Confidence that you can do the job is highly uncorrelated with being a competent leader.
Unfortunately, confidence is also highly correlated with the likelihood of becoming a manager.
Folks that you need to tap on the shoulder and nudge into the role see it as a responsibility and take it on as a new skill they learn.
It’s our job to hire leaders that are worth following. Not just the ones who sound like it.
